Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Today we honor the achievements of Martin Luther King, Jr., a Baptist minister and civil rights activist who advocated for nonviolent means to end racial segregation.  Best know for his "I Have A Dream" speech, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, TN on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39. The campaign for a federal holiday in his honor began soon after his assassination. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983.  It was first observed on January 20, 1986.
